With the release of the Ohio School Report Cards, we have occasion to celebrate districts that demonstrated positive results and measurable progress in student outcomes. These accomplishments reflect the sustained efforts of students, educators, families, and school communities. We congratulate districts showing improvement and encourage all school systems to remain focused on advancing academic achievement, closing opportunity gaps, and ensuring that every student receives the support needed to thrive.

As summer break draws to a close, it is my pleasure to welcome Ohio’s educators back for the beginning of another academic year. Whether you serve as a teacher, school leader, counselor, support professional, administrator, or community partner, your commitment is essential to the success and well-being of our young scholars.

This month, we proudly recognize and celebrate Juneteenth, a historic milestone commemorating the final emancipation of enslaved Africans in the United States. Juneteenth stands as a powerful reminder of the enduring struggle for freedom, justice, and equality. It marks a significant victory over the systems of slavery, Jim Crow laws, segregation, and institutional racism that sought to deny generations of African Americans their humanity and opportunity.

This year’s conference was far more than an event — it was a powerful movement of educators, school leaders, students, corporate partners, parents, advocates, and community stakeholders coming together with a shared commitment to empowering excellence in public education.

I am especially pleased to share that the kick-off of our OABSE Regional Listening Tour was a tremendous success. The Northeast Ohio session was marked by meaningful and thoughtful dialogue among educators and education leaders who came prepared to speak candidly about the issues, challenges, and opportunities facing our schools and communities.

As we come to the close of February, we conclude a month filled with celebration, inspiration, and deep reflection on both the struggles and the victories of people of African descent. Black History Month always reminds us that progress is never accidental — it is the result of sacrifice, resilience, intellect, and collective action. Our responsibility is not only to remember history, but to continue building it through our daily work with young scholars, families, and communities.

On October 15, 2024--Battelle announced today the funding of 248 grants totaling $1,160,000 to enhance STEM learning in classrooms across Ohio.
